When I first saw the headline, I’m like, “Why are you going there?”
Many of you have seen this headline, because it’s been all over the place.
“Yes sir, I do think about that a lot,” Travis said Saturday.
I was not there Saturday. It was the same time as my radio show on SiriusXM NFL Radio, so I did not see this press conference in person.
But when I saw that headline all over the place, I was a little surprised the kid went there.
My knee-jerk reaction was thinking: “First get healthy and learn the playbook first.”
But when you read the rest of the quote his approach was just right.
“Right now, I’m just focused where my feet are, just getting healthy, getting everybody around me better, being a great teammate,” Travis said.
He’s thankful for the opportunity to continue his football career with the Jets after suffering a horrific leg injury last season against North Alabama.
“I’m just thankful to have a ball in my hand again and have a helmet on my head,” Travis said. “I mean, it’s a dream come true at the end of the day. It’s an opportunity for me to get better. That’s what I look at every single thing as. God has a plan for me.”
So even though that one line took the internet by storm, he does seem to have the right mindset about where he’s at right now.
But the way the internet is, and how many are looking for clickbait, and attention-grabbing headlines, that one sentence, went viral.
Check out this reckless headline, and I won’t name the site, but they are known for this stuff . . .
Headline – “Jets Rookie QB Jordan Travis Wants To Take Aaron Rodgers’ Job.”
This player possibly taking over for Rodgers, is a long way away, if it ever does indeed happen.
The legendary QB wants to play 2-3 more years, and if the future Hall-of-Famer did get hurt, Tyrod Taylor will play, and honestly, if Taylor got hurt, it likely wouldn’t be Travis this year. They would likely go out and sign a veteran.
Not only does Travis need to get back to 100 percent coming off a horrific leg injury, but like a lot of college QB prospects, he has a lot to work on.
“Travis doesn’t usually beat defenses with pre-snap planning or eye work and can be a step slow to get through progressions and throw with anticipation,” wrote draft analyst Lance Zeirlein for NFL.com.
So we are looking at another college QB prospect who needs work getting off his first read (which is usually open in college) and going through his progessions better.
Lather, rinse and repeat with almost all of these prospects.
Getting better at this stuff could take a couple of years for Travis, if it ever happens. Some guys can figure out, some can’t.
We will see if Travis can become a full-field reader who can go through his progressions effectively.
Maybe yes, maybe no.
Sam Darnold and Zach Wilson couldn’t master this.
Maybe Travis can.
But the last thing he should be focusing on right now is being Rodgers’ successor.
A lot has to happen before that would be a consideration.
