Jets defensive end Bryce Huff will become a free agent next week, and while the team would like to keep him, he could get a better offer elsewhere and bolt.
But whether he re-signs with the Jets or goes somewhere else what will his price tag look like?
He deserves big bucks, but perhaps not Myles Garrett-Nick Bosa-Maxx Crosby defensive end money, for one clear reason.
“He’s eclectic off the edge,” said former NFL GM Michael Lombardi on VSIN. “The question I would is can he play every down?”
Huff is 6 ft 1 5/8 and 255 pounds, and has been used as a situational pass rusher by the Jets. However, if you pay him $17-20 million-a-year, you are likely going to want him to play more.
“He’s not going to be in there against certain formations,” Lombardi said. “If they are in ’21’ personnel (two running backs and one tight end), you’re not going to put him on the field.
“The problem is can he hold up against the run and people are going to run the football at him if he’s in the game. If you are going to increase his play rate, you know that people are going to attack him (with running plays). He is undersized.”
Lombardi loves his talent as an edge rusher calling him a “really good player,” but what does the price tag look like for a talented edge-rusher who might have to come off the field against certain running formations?
It’s going to be great money, but perhaps a little below the upper echelon of end salaries.
