After Jake Hanson gave up a sack late in the first half to end a series, and pulled his hamstring, Olu Fashanu went in over guard Chris Lindstrom and did a great job in his first game as a guard.
Fashanu did have a holding call that brought back a Rodgers scramble for a first down, but the team’s pass protection definitely improved in the second half with I’m in the lineup.
This was a gutsy move by Jeff Ulbrich – putting in a rookie tackle, at guard, a position he never played, and the move worked . . .
Recently, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith said that Aaron Rodgers should retire.
Recently, FSI’s Colin Cowherd said Rodgers “is done.”
Neither seemed to be the case in the Jets’ win over Houston.
Rodgers iced the game with a beautiful 37-yard TD pass to Davante Adams down the right sideline.
I have been covering the Jets for a quarter century, even in this 3-6 season, I have never seen as many elite plays from the QB position as I have seen the year.
I have said this to people all along, during the five-game losing streak, Rodgers is the least of the Jets’ problems.
Here is the deal with Rodgers:
He’s at the point of his career, where he can’t put a team on his back, and help them overcome their shortcomings, like he did in Green Bay.
But if the team plays good complementary football, he is still a very good QB, you can win a lot of games with . . .
The Jets have a tendency to run past quarterbacks while rushing, and you saw some nice runs and passes downfield when they ran past Stroud.
If they do this against Arizona, and Kyler Murray, they are going to have major problems.
That is what he is banking on.
At 5-9, he has issues seeing and functioning in the pocket.
The Jets better work on this leading up to the Cardinals game . . .
Why did the Jets decide to go with three undrafted free agent defensive linemen on their active roster?
Isn’t that a little much?
Eric Watts seems liked more of a practice squad player as a raw prospect out of UConn. He plays too upright and needs to lower his pad level.
He had a bad penalty – roughing the long-snapper – on a field goal late in the game, giving the Texans a first down on fourth and 22.
The Jets run defense isn’t good, and some of these issues were related to the youth in the defensive line rotation.
Three undrafted rookie free agents in your defensive line rotation? C’mon now.
Nothing against any of these fine young men who all have upside, but go out and get a veteran defensive tackle before the trade deadline and move one of these guys to the practice squad . . .
D.J. Reed beat on a 50-yard pass down left side early fourth by Tank Dell. Reed is a very good player, but one of the reasons he went in the fifth round was a 4.52 forty.
He is the kind of guy you want on your team, want in your secondary, but you don’t want him matched up with speedsters if you can avoid it . . .
Jets gave up 187 yards rushing tonight. The defense did some good things, but let’s not put them in Canton.
187 yards!
After the game, in the stadium they were playing the song by “Fatboy Slim” – called “Praise you (like I should).”
We should praise the Jets like we should after this game – the touchdown catch by Garrett Wilson is one of the greatest catches of all time. The TD to Adams was a good one, but they still have a lot work to do.
Keep in mind, the Texans were playing without their two starting receivers – Diggs and Collins.
Good win for the Jets, but they have a lot to clean up before the Arizona game.
