Madison – It’s time to wrap up our Buffalo film review with a look at the secondary, and we also provide from notes from Jets Camp. Let’s go . .
Kyle Wilson ended the Bills first drive with an impressive PD down the left seam on a pass to WR David Nelson.
On the Bills second drive, they ran a sweep to C.J. Spiller to the left side, and Brodney Pool did a nice job of running him out of bounds for no gain, but was called for a 15-yard facemask penalty.
Also on the Bills second drive, Brad Smith beat Antonio Cromartie for a gain of 17 down the right sideline. Smith pretended he was going deep, but he and Fitzpatrick had a wink-wink going on, and he cut the route off in the middle, and the quarterback hit him on a back shoulder throw.
Another big chunk pass on this drive was Stevie Johnson beating Darrelle Revis for a gain of 15. Johnson did a nice job of driving Revis up field on the left hash, and then made a quick cut inside.
This drive ended with an eight-yard touchdown in the middle of the end zone to Nelson. He beat Kyle Wilson on the play. This is a tough matchup for Wilson since the 6-5 Nelson has seven inches on him.
Wilson also had an issue with Nelson on the Bills last possession. Nelson beat him for a gain of 18 on a crossing route, and was also called for holding (declined).
Late in the first half, after a Sanchez pick deep in Jets territory, Johnson beat Revis on a quick slant for an eight-yard TD. This is the first TD pass Revis has given up this year.
The Bills first drive of the third quarter ended with Eric Smith stopped a swing pass to C.J. Spiller on the left side for a loss of three.
Cro had a two play stretch late in the third quarter he soon forget.
First he muffed a punt, and the Bills recovered, and then on the very next play, Smith beat him for a 36-yard TD down the right seam. Cro had good coverage, but the ball got tipped in the air, and Smith caught it behind the corner and ran in for a touchdown.
Cro had a nice play on the Bills final drive, breaking up a pass to Smith in the left corner of the end zone. Then on the final play of the game, Jim Leonhard had great position on Johnson in the front middle of the end zone, and helped cause an incompletion.
Today notes –
As I was driving into the complex today, I saw one guy left on the practice field – Jeremy Kerley, working on the jugs machine. He looks like he’s good to go on Sunday . . .
Very smart move by Mark Sanchez admitting he didn’t play well against Buffalo.
“Me, personally, us as an offense, the first and second down pass game was awful – it was the worst I’ve ever been,” Sanchez said. “We have to play better. It’s not a winning formula.”
This helps Rex out. The head coach was raving about Sanchez after the game and on Monday, and some of his praise was over the top, and unwarranted. Ryan handles his QB with kid gloves, and takes the high road when talking about him. But Sanchez making these comments publicly allows the head coach to tone down his hyperbole . . .
This just in – Matt Slauson is a very good football player. He has turned into a sixth round steal. He’s fundamentally sounds, rarely makes a mistake, plays hurt, and is better on the second level, pulling, than many thought he would be . . .
Dexter Jackson, re-signed to the Jets practice squad, is a very talented returner with world class speed.
