The pass coverage was a little shaky in the first quarter, but then things improved. Let’s take a look.
There was a blown coverage on the first series, a 42-yard gain to tight end Fred Davis, who was uncovered on the left side, caught the pass, and got a lot of RAC.
Then late in the first quarter, Santana Moss beat the Jets on a timing route, cutting from the left hash to the inside, and when he cut, nobody followed him. The play gained 21 yards. Antonio Cromartie was covering him before the cut, but then it looked like he thought he was getting safety help on the cut, and he didn’t get it. Cromartie and Brodney Pool had a chat after the play.
Kyle Wilson had a terrific play early in the second quarter, on a second-and-10. The Redskins threw a quick hitch to Moss on the left side, and Wilson didn’t allow him any room to run, and stopped him for a loss of one (along with Bart Scott).
On the first play of a mid-second quarter Washington possession, Grossman completed a pass down the deep left side to Davis for 27 yards, but the Jets challenged whether he had both feet in bounds, and the challenge was successful. The combination of Jim Leonhard and Eric Smith did a nice job of hitting him after the catch, and not allowing him to get both feet down.
Two plays later, Pool had an interception over the middle off a pass that was tipped by Aaron Maybin. But the pick was negated due to a holding call on Donald Strickland.
A few plays later this drive ended when Grossman threw to David Anderson down the deep right side, but Cro had blanket coverage, and the pass fell incomplete.
Late in the first half, Davis caught a crossing route for a gain of 30. He beat Strickland on this play, and then broke a tackle attempt by Donald to gain the final 15 yards on the play. Also on this this possession, Strickland had an effective blitz, got to Grossman, and the quarterback had to throw the pass away. He was called for intentional grounding.
The Redskins got the ball back one last time in the first half due to a muffed punt. On a third-and-five on this possession, Grossman attempted a pass over the short middle to RB Roy Helu, and Leonhard knocked it way, and the Redskins had to settle for a short field goal.
The Jets secondary was solid in the second half, especially in the third quarter, when the Redskisn got nothing done.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Anderson beat Kyle Wilson for a gain of 13 on the short left side. A few plays later, on third-and-six, Davis beat Pool for a gain of 12 on the short left side. Pool had an usual approach on this play. He never tried to tip the pass, but went right for the tackle.
On the possession where the Redskins kicked a field goal to go up 16-13, on the play before the kick, Cro broke up a pass in the end zone to Anderson.
Strickland had two PD’s on Davis late in the game, and the second one, was tipped to Wilson for an interception.
The Redskins stayed away from Revis most of the game. The only pass play he gave up was a 14-yard gain to Dante Stallworth late in the game on a drive that resulted in a field goal.
