“Everyones looks at the world through a different set of eyes.”
That is something Nick Saban says all the time.
So some people might think the following is okay, and others might not like it.
The Jets put a video on Twitter promoting their show One Jets Drive, and Tweeted: “#JetsTwitter WE NEED YOUR HELP!! Â 1. Watch this video 2. Get chills 3. Go vote One Jets Drive Season 4 for a Webby!!”
There are a lot of behind-the-scenes video and interviews.
Cryptojersey80 replied on Twitter: “Get the chills? I am a Jets fan and I can’t imagine anybody at this point could get the chills over any Jets video? Let’s freaking start off by having a winning season before we can think of the Jets giving us the chills!!!
“One Jets Drive is just propaganda to make fans think the team isn’t awful.” – tweeted WoodsideWolf41
So this begs the question – Should you be hyping up a team coming off a 4-13 season?
Obviously Cryptojersey80 and WoodsideWolf41 aren’t interested in this.
But other people love it.
“Goose Bumps! Yeah baby! Can’t wait!” – tweeted Denise Kovitz.
“I almost cried watching this video. That’s my team man!” – tweeted Young June
Some think the Jets hype themselves up too much considering their struggles in recent years, but perhaps they feel they need to hype things up on social media and on One Jets Drive to sell tickets.
And in fairness, some of you might remember, that NFL teams used to put out yearly highlight films after the season. They were produced by NFL Films, and they could make a 1-15 team look like a Super Bowl champ. They would look at the last season in a positive way, and then pivot to looking forward at the team’s positive future.
So teams doing hype videos is nothing new.
But some find the Jets hype a little much considering their recent struggles.
After a hype video in February, a fan named Emily Gibbs tweeted, “Less talk, more action.”
Interesting thing about Emily is that she is a newscaster in Dayton, Ohio. She is originally from New Jersey and went to Rutgers.
So this cuts both ways. Some people don’t want to see a team hyping themselves up with tweets and videos coming off a poor season. Some love it.
My opinion is you have to be careful here. If you are trying to build a strong football culture, you need to stand clear of moral victories, and the Jets’ Twitter account traveled down that road times at times last year, hyping up individual players after losses. That stuff you want to avoid if you are looking to build a powerful football culture.
In one of the off-season hype videos, there was a soundbite from Zach Wilson after a tough game: “Everything I went through today was a learning process for the future.”
Not to be a broken record, but I don’t view the NFL as a developmental league. You play to win the game.
“Year One, there are a lot of steps creating the culture here that is going to create a winner,” Jeff Ulbrich said in an off-season video that appeared right after the Super Bowl concluded.
We will see if they have the culture to create a winner this year, and after 11 years out of the playoffs, getting to the playoffs next season, would probably truly send chills down the spines of many Jets fans who are hunger for a winner.
More so than videos and tweets.
