In a November 30 press briefing, his first with the beat writers since his Week 1 injury, QB Aaron Rodgers took the high road when talking about the team’s struggles, but did drop one slight critique saying the team needed to play better “situational football.”
“Situational football” is a big thing in practice, going over all kinds of scenarios and how you will handle them if they come up in games. So teams have situational periods focused on things like red zone offense/defense, two-minute drill, goalline defense and so forth.
Something happened late in the Jets’ season finale that was a case of situational football that needs to improve.
Safety Ashtyn Davis picked off New England Patriots QB Bailey Zappe late in the game, and instead of just going down to allow the Jets to run out the clock, the safety attempted to run with the ball, and looked like he was looking to lateral to CB Sauce Gardner, but fumbled, and it was recovered by New England.
“You’ve got the game, take a knee,” said Patriots radio analyst Scott Zolak after the fumble. “He was looking to lateral to Sauce Gardner in the snow.”
So improved “situational football” is something that could be a big focus this off-season.
