What you saw in this Jets’ win . . .
is what happens when you have a cornucopia of weapons and what it can do to a defense.
With receivers Elijah Moore, Garrett Wilson and Corey Davis on the field together, teams don’t know who to double, and Joe Flacco took advantage of which guy was getting a favorable matchup, and was spreading the ball around.
And then you saw on the late 66-yard TD to Davis, there was so much attention being paid to Wilson and Moore, that the Browns totally blew the coverage, leaving Davis wide open . . .
The Jets got a huge break in this game when defensive end Jadeveon Clowney got hurt his ankle in the third quarter.
He was getting the best of Jets rookie right tackle Max Mitchell, including beating him to cause a Joe Flacco fumble in the first half.
The Jets’ offense really seemed to take over after the injury because it allowed them to give extra attention to Myles Garrett.
“I think we wore him out,” Robert Saleh said about Garrett. “We were chipping the heck out of him. Running. We ran the ball really well for the most part. It was hot down there. You could just see. The guy is an unbelievable talent. I’m not going to speak for him, but we were trying to bother the heck out of him all game.”
And they bothered him a lot more after Clowney got hurt.
Who knows how this game turns out if Clowney stays healthy?
But you what, the Jets haven’t had a lot of luck the last few years, and today they got a large dose of it.
From the Clowney injury to Corey Davis being left open for 66-yard TD late to having a rare successful on-side kick, it turned out to be the Jets’ day . . .
The Jets’ pass defense needs to play a lot better if this team wants to have a successful season. Aside from a late pick as the clock was winding down, they made a pedestrian QB, Jacoby Brissett, look like Aaron Rodgers, going 22-27 for 229 yards and a touchdown.
There were too many easy throws for a QB who isn’t a full field-reader and doesn’t throw with a ton of anticipation. He had too many big windows to throw into.
The Jets better tighten things up with Joe Burrow coming to town with a desperate 0-2 Cincinnati Bengal teams loaded with passing game weapons.
There was another communication breakdown on the back end leaving receiver Amari Cooper wide open in the end zone. Sauce Gardner and Jordan Whitehead didn’t seem to be on the same page.
There were a few of these coverage breakdowns against Baltimore in the opener.
I’m telling you, if they don’t clean this up, Burrow is going to have a field day . . .
I think Michael Clemons running down on kicks is ill-advised. Not his thing. A 44-yard kickoff return in the second-quarter was right at home. You rarely see guys built like him doing it. 6-5, 270 stiff hips – trouble changing directions in the open field.
Look, he’s a good player who can help the Jets on defense, but not sure why he’s on kick coverage. Strange . . .
