Dan checks in with the good stuff from Cortland, including good stuff on Mike Vick, the cornerbacks and so much more. Let’s jump into it . . .
Michael Vick has had a lot of passes tipped and blocked this summer. There were a couple more today.
He’s only 6-0, and this can be a problem for him at times.
Today, he had a pass tipped by DE Tevita Finau, and it led to an interception.
Vick also had a pass tipped today by Calvin Pryor on a blitz . . .
One observation from this summer – both Vick and Geno Smith have a tendency to hold the ball too long.
Vick took offense to this last year, but the feeling in Philadelphia was the ball was getting out a lot faster when Nick Foles took over at quarterback . . .
Rex Ryan is loyal to the point of defiance when it comes to Kyle Wilson.
Wilson seems to be a “see-and-go” reactor. He works hard, but his instincts are so-so.
The guy gets beat way too often, but Rex continues to rave about him
Strange stuff . . .
One of the real pleasant surprises for the Jets this summer has been inside linebacker A.J. Edds.
The former Iowa star has had an outstanding camp. He earned a spot on the roster after a tryout at the rookie mini-camp.
Today, he had a terrific stop in the backfield of running back Daryl Richardson . . .
Quincy Enunwa continues to ascend. There were times today, when the Jets ran a one wide receiver set, with the starters, and he was the one receiver.
He’s a big, powerful receiver who is very good at winning battles for the ball in traffic . . .
Now the Jets have settled on Brian Winters at left guard (the competition seems to be over), it’s been good for the line’s continuity. It’s been three days in a row with no platoon.
Today was one of the better days of pass protection, I’ve seen from the Jets line all summer.
On a nice pass down the right seam from Geno Smith to Greg Salas (who continues to shine), the quarterback had all day to throw . . .
The feeling around the Jets is that Dee Milliner has a high ankle sprain. My guess is he will be out a month. This isn’t like Nick Mangold who missed a couple of weeks with this injury. Mangold plays in a small zone. Milliner’s job requires a lot more speed, quickness and cutting, and the toughest part of a high ankle sprain is cutting.
“You don’t want to rush back and mess it up even more,” Milliner said today.
The Jets are having an open competition for Milliner’s stop with players like Ellis Lankster, Ras-I Dowling, Johnny Patrick, Darrin Walls and Antonio Allen in the mix.
I’d go with Walls. He’s the most consistent. That is the word Tim McDonald used to describe Walls today – “consistent.”
As for the other starter, while Rex Ryan says Dimitri Patterson is dealing with a few leg issues, it’s the quad injury that is keeping him out.
He should be back in a few weeks . . .
Getting back to Allen, as first reported here yesterday, he’s in cornerback mix. He’s had a great summer in coverage, and is a good match-up against big receivers, which the league is loaded with. One thing that makes Allen an attractive option to help at cornerback is that he mauls receiver at the line, much like the guys in Seattle . . .
