It’s time for a heaping helping of “The Good Stuff,” from Jets Confidential publisher Daniel Leberfeld . . . check it out . . . just $7.95 per month . . .
The Jets still need an edge pass rusher, and there are a few they might be able to grab when free agency starts.
One possibility is Cleveland Brown Matt Roth.
He feels his days in Cleveland are over because the Browns are moving to a 4-3 defense.
“Right now I kind of like the 3-4 [defensive system],” Roth said to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. “I feel the Browns are on the right track. But going into my seventh season, I want to play for a winner.”
You get the sense the Browns are going to be awful this year. They have a rookie head coach putting in new system, and he’s yet to work with his players yet. Plus, it’s unclear if they have an answer at quarterback.
So Roth, a 3-4 OLB, will be looking to join a team that plays the 3-4, that also looks like a contender.
The Jets would be perfect.
And he’s not going to cost a fortune.
Roth is a good pass rusher, not a great one, but he’s a tough SOB with a great motor. He’s the kind of guy you want on your team – he’s relentless.
Another guy to keep an eye on is the Giants Mathias Kiwinuka. A source close to the Giants tells us, while he’s been tagged, he likely can be had. And after all, we really don’t now what the tags mean right now with no CBA in place.
“Kiwi” wants to start, and since the Giants have Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora, it’s not likely to happen.
And the source close to the Giants doesn’t think he will be that expensive.
“He’s comin off a neck injury, so I’m guessin it wouldn’t cost too much,” said the source. “As good as he’s been in sub packages he’s never really started. $1-1.5 mil a year with a lot of incentives could get it done.”
Another player out there is former Tennessee Titan Jason Babin, coming off a 12.5 sack season. But from what we hear, he wants to play in a 4-3, so that might rule him out . . .
“After watching Muhammad Wilkerson on tape wouldn’t you think he reminds you of a younger Shaun Ellis? asked Ira from Staten Island on a local website.
To a degree, but while Wilkerson is a terrific prospect, Ellis has more of a mean streak . . .
John Abraham sounded off on twitter, blasting the Jets a few days ago.
He has every right to be pissed at Gang Green. The Jets should never have traded him, and as we mentioned in the last note, they need a pass rusher. They have NEVER replaced him.
The irony of the situation is that they traded him because he didn’t fit Mangini’s character template, but then Rex took over a few years later, Abraham would have been a player Ryan would have embraced.
That is the problem with changing philosphies every few years.
Now with Rex seemingly here for the long haul, constant change might be a thing of the past.
But can you imagine what Rex could do with a player like John Abraham?
My goodness . . .
The Jets having a workout this week being held in a private spot. The workouts are going on until Wednesday. I’d be shocked, with all the leaks on this team, that if a reporter doesn’t break the code, and figure out where the workouts are going on.
The story about the workouts was broken by ESPN New York.
Everyone in the locker room knows who the source is for that one. It’s the worst kept secret in the locker room.
I’d be shocked if Manish doesn’t find out where it’s taking place.
Stay tuned . . .
