New Jersey – One day after a report had Doug Marrone as the favorite for the job, the same website said today that the interview didn’t go well. I’m not poking fun at him, just pointing out what was reported . . .
The Jets interviewed Houston Texans executive Mike Maccagnan for their GM job today.
One thing you need to consider.
It’s assumed that he would favor Doug Marrone being the coach.
This theory emanates from the fact that Maccagnan signed Marrone, a guard, to play for the London Monarchs in the World League of American Football.
Perhaps, but this happened in 1991, some 23 years ago.
Maccagnan actually has a stronger connection to Gary Kubiak. Mike worked in the Texans personnel department Gary’s entire time as the coach in Houston.
So Maccagnan is actually closer to Gary than Doug.
So Gary might be his choice.
But I kind of feel bad for the Jets. The media landscape here is scaring off some candidates.
It’s a sad day when we (the media) can impact a team’s ability to attract candidates for football jobs.
Manish Mehta of the Daily News has been destroying Marrone.
Considering Marrone’s family wasn’t crazy about how the media treated him in small-market Buffalo, how must they feel about how Doug is being destroyed as just a candidate for the job?
Greg Gabriel, a long-time NFL executive, who now writes for the National Football Post, has a big problem with what Mehta is doing to Marrone.
“I have one thing to say, it’s total garbage! All you have to do is follow Mehta’s tweets over the last week, and you see he is one who wants to sabotage the Jets possible hiring of Marrone. He doesn’t want Marrone to be the coach, so he will make his feelings known in any way possible. He quotes “sources” inside the Bills’ front office, but names none. Were they the General Manager or CEO? I highly doubt it.
“When you look at Mehta’s article, you see the same “quotes” that negative Buffalo writers have written or talked about on talk radio which leads me to believe that Mehta’s sources were his media friends.
“The fact is, Doug Marrone is highly thought of by respected football people throughout the National Football League. What Mehta is trying to do is manipulate the process with his writing when, in reality, it’s an area he knows nothing about.
“They also do the opposite and criticize a candidate because of his ‘association’ with someone they don’t like.”
This last line nails it.
I’ve said this before, and I will say it again – an ESPN New York writer, and a New York Post columnist, are friends with Marrone. One helped him get the Syracuse job.
Mehta is clearly trying to protect his turf.
If Marrone gets the job, Manish probably figures Doug will spoon feed info to these two writers.
This whole situation is sad to me.
The idea that we (the media) might impact the thinking of candidates, because they don’t want to deal with us, is very troubling.
Chris Mortensen, who is close with super-agent Jimmy Sexton, claimed today that Dan Quinn is the leading candidate.
I’m not going to hide my feelings on this. I have a big problem with it.
I have nothing against Quinn personally, but this idea that the Jets would hire somebody who John Idzik wanted to hire two years ago, but wasn’t allowed to, because he was force to keep Rex, is troubling to me.
You talk about a slap in the face.
I’d pick Marrone over Quinn, but that is just me.
I have no hidden agenda here.
