There are some holes in this logic . . .
Look, in a way, Zach Wilson is a victim here. If they were going fix all the mechanical issues that led to his problems in 2022, starting him early this season, perhaps wasn’t a good idea, Aaron Rodgers injury or no Aaron Rodgers injury. The reboot wasn’t given enough time.
Just like last year’s reboot wasn’t given enough time.
They took a timeout with him last year, after a rough game in New England on November 20. Mike White started the next three games, but then after White suffered broken ribs against Buffalo, Wilson started the next two games, in Week 15 and 16, both losses, and they pulled him again for the final two games.
None of Wilson’s mechanical or fundamental issues were fixed during White’s three starts. And very little was fixed backing up Rodgers for four plays, before taking over this year.
The idea was to redshirt him this year and let him sit behind Rodgers and learn. Rodgers got hurt, but that doesn’t mean his problems were fixed that fast.
Just like last year when he was rushed into action following a timeout to fix his mechanics and fundamentals, a similar thing happened this year. True, he worked hard this off-season on his mechanics and footwork, but are those muscle memory issues arent’ going to fixed in a few months, and he really wasn’t working with Rodgers very long.
If you are going to hit the reset button to fix a QB, just because an injury happens to another QB, doesn’t mean he’s ready to roll again just yet.
He should have made him third string, last year, and then this year, and have another QB fill-in if the starter goes does, so you handle the reboot right.
A defiant Robert Saleh was asked why he is sticking with Zach Wilson as his starter after Sunday’s Jets loss to New England.
“He is the one who gives us the best chance to win,” Saleh said.
A player who throws a two-yard pass to tight end Tyler Conklin on the short right side, on fourth-and-10, late in the game, gives you the best chance to win?
What a slap in the face to Tim Boyle, who has been in the league since 2018, with stints in Green Bay, Detroit and now the Jets. Not putting Boyle in Canton, but man what an insult to the 29-year-old Connecticut native.
“Yeah, he’s fine.” – Saleh on if Wilson has shown him enough to continue to be the starter.
No, he’s not fine.
His eye level is bad as Scott Zolak said on Sunday. He’s not seeing the field well, not trusting his eyes.
His completion percentage of 50 percent on Sunday, going 18-36. As we said over and over, a former NFL QB told us that it’s hard to sustain drives when half the passes are hitting the ground.
Robert Saleh could lose the locker room if he stays with Wilson. This isn’t just a cliche, it’s true.
“The film don’t lie.”
There is no doubt there are players in the locker room thinking, “What the hell is going on here?” What’s with the fatal attraction?
But nobody should make Wilson into a war criminal here. He doesn’t want to struggle.
He’s a victim of two rushed reboots.
