Perhaps not the time . . .
He’s a good player and quality person, the kind of guy you want in your locker room, but should the Jets give Quinnen Williams a massive extension this year?
Paul Andrew Esden Jr of Heavy.com tweeted out something that drew the attention of the defensive tackle, leading him to call somebody a “liar.”
“The Jets have been ‘checking in’ with Quinnen Williams and his agent (Nicole Lynn) basically through the entire offseason about a long-term deal, per Rich Cimini. He’s probably looking at something in the $17-20 million a year range,” tweeted Edsen.
Edsen then noticed a response to his tweet from Williams himself.
“lol @RichCimini stop lying on Twitter,” Williams tweeted.
Williams deleted this tweet shortly after posting it.
Not sure what Williams feels Cimini was supposedly “lying” about. All the writer did was say that the Jets have been talking to the agent, and then the writer speculated about what the deal might look like.
We can only guess that Williams had one or two issues with what Cimini said on his podcast.
Either he doesn’t think there have been legitimate negotiations between his agent and the team, or he doesn’t agree with the ballpark contact figures thrown out.
But this begs the question – Is it time to give Williams his second contract?
Remember, they have him secured for two more years – the fourth year of his rookie deal thi season, and then in 2023 with his fifth-year option, which the team recently picked up.
So they don’t have to do anything now, or next year.
Nothing against the player, but perhaps it’s not the ideal time to extend him.
Why? Two reasons. He still has a lot to prove. Secondly, he’s had issues staying healthy. Hey, it’s not his fault he’s had health issues, and he does play hurt, but he has yet to play a full slate of games in any of his three seasons.
One reason he might have had some durability issues is he’s not a huge guy for an interior defensive lineman. Now he is a freakish athlete, who moves well for a guy who seems to be in the 290-range.
But there are some centers and guards, who are much bigger than him, and this leads to a lot of wear-and-tear for Williams.
It has nothing to do with toughness. Williams is plenty tough, but there are times he gets pounded, and sometimes taken to the ground by these massive, powerful interior linemen who are much bigger than them. It’s not his fault. but if a blocker outweighs somebody by 3o-40 pounds, you do the math.
The key for Williams is “winning early.” In other words, when he’s at his best, he jumps into gaps right after the snap, beating the lineman, and creating havoc in the backfield. If he doesn’t win off the snap, and the interior offensive lineman latches on to him, sometimes he has trouble shedding them.
The Jets gave up a lot of big runs last year, and Williams, just like many other guys, was guilty of not getting off blocks at times, leading to some big holes for opposing runners.
Look, Williams is a very talented player and has good character, but now might not be the time for that second deal.
When you extend a player, they need to be settled science, where you know exactly what you have. It’s hard to say that just yet with Williams.
