As you know by now . . .
Zach Wilson has an ankle injury.
During the media part of practice today, he was out there, but he needed to go over to a trainer to either get extra taping on it, or to get it retaped. It was too far away to see for sure, but they were taping his ankle.
It looks like something he can play with, but here is the potential problem.
This is a player, who has a world of talent with his arm talent and escapability in the pocket, but struggles with throwing mechanics at times, which leads to a lot of incompletions. While his work in the fourth quarter during the Jets’ comeback was impressive in Pittsburgh, overall in the game he completed 50 percent of his passes. As you know, that’s not an ideal number on the NFL level.
And when you are a player who has issues with your throwing mechanics at times, having a bad wheel could make it worse, because obviously footwork is a big part of throwing.
It should be noted that Wilson walked up to his press conference in the locker room barefoot, and no wrap on either ankle, and no limp, so it doesn’t seem that serious . . .
I asked Kwon Alexander who has faced Tyreek Hill a few times, what is the best way to deal with Hill, perhaps the most dangerous receiver in the NFL.
“Just hit’em – make him quit,” Alexander said . . .
Not sure what the Jets are going to do at right tackle this week with Max Mitchell out with a knee injury.
The Jets signed offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi off the Houston Texans practice squad. He has started at left and right tackle in the NFL, and asked him today which one he played more, and he said “right.”
So he could be a candidate to start this week.
He’s a little more athletic than Conor McDermott, the backup swing tackle.
If could still be McDermott because Ogbuehi has only been in the system a week.
Mike Remmers is another option, but hasn’t played football in a while after landing on IR last year in KC. He wasn’t in a camp this summer and was signed to the Jets practice squad last week. He has 90 career NFL starts, mostly at right tackle . . .
You know what is a little strange? The Jets came out against the Baltimore Ravens with Lawrence Cagers in the line-up on offense, but we haven’t seen him active since that game.
He did have a penalty in that game, and fell (not his fault) on a pass from Joe Flacco that was picked off.
But if you loved the guy so much as a weapon to have him out on the field on offense to start the season, why is he now inactive every week?
Is it because Jeremy Ruckert is back? Heck of a prospect but still getting his sea legs.
It’s just strange that you could value a guy so much to come out with him in the lineup early in Week One, and now he’s inactive?
Do you think he’s a big-time weapon or not?
The guy is a 6-5, 242-pound tight end who runs under 4.6?
Why not have him in the mix? . . .
Saw Denzel Mims in the locker room today talking to a teammate.
He seems to be handling being in limbo with class, not making waves.
The Jets are willing to trade him, but not give him away.
Joe Douglas is a very good poker player. He showed that with the Jamal Adams trade. He’s not going to blink.
And as the war of attrition of the NFL season continues, and receiver injuries pile up, somebody is likely going to blink and give Douglas what he wants.
