A few things to get into . . .
This is something you need to avoid as an NFL QB.
And that is throwing late over the deep middle, and Zach Wilson did that today and the pass was picked off by nickel back Michael Carter.
Never throw late over the deep middle! . . .
No matter how much you try to avoid contact in these practices, sometimes it’s inevitable.
On a crossing route, a QB threw a crossing route to Jeff Smith and safety Jordan Whitehead was perfectly positioned, and would have lit up Smith in a real game, he pulled up, but they still collided, and Smith was slow to get up.
Just like on Wednesday, when Garrett Wilson got entangled with a DB on a fade on the left side of the end zone, and limped back to the huddle.
The players try, but it’s hard, especially for wide receivers and defensive backs, vying for the same ball, to avoid contact at all times . . .
Speaking of Whitehead, he’s going to help the Jets secondary a great deal. Watching him at OTAs, he has very good instincts, and is often at the right place at the right time . . .
Saw this headline from headline in late April in doing research today for this story:
“Mekhi Becton voluntary workout absence not worrying Jets.”
Yes it is. It was worrying them then and is now, but they aren’t allowed to be critical publicly due to the voluntary nature of all off-season workouts, aside from the mandatory minicamp, which is next week.
When you have a second-year player, who has battled weight issues, had a rough summer last year, and then suffered a serious knee injury in the opener that he’s still rehabbing, and he’s only 23, of course you want him here for your off-season program. That is a no-brainer.
You can’t say anything, but sometimes actions speak louder than words. The Jets hosted offensive tackle Riley Reiff today, a first-round pick of Detroit, who also spent time in Minnesota and Cincinnati.
They also picked Max Mitchell in the fourth round, a player with starting potential at right tackle, after some seasoning.
If you don’t think Becton’s absence bothers the Jets, well, why would Robert Saleh say during a press conference in early May – “We’d love you back here, buddy!” Saleh said smiling. “Come on. We’ll take care of you.”
Yes, there was a the birth of his baby in late May, but there was clearly time periods he probably could have been here.
This perhaps goes beyond the baby. There are clearly some underlying issues between the player and team, not that the team did anything wrong.
Don’t you think that if this was college football, he might enter the transfer portal?
And for anybody to think that the Jets are okay with a player with weight issues, coming off a knee injury, and in need of technique work, not being here the last couple of months for the off-season workout program, I have some great swamp land to sell you . . .
As I’m sure you will read all over Twitter, tight end Lawrence Cager had another strong day today. Look we are talking about a receiver who played at the powerhouse Georgia, a program loaded with four and five-star players. It’s hard to get on the field there. He’s very talented, and the Jets are turning him into a tight end this spring, and he’s outrunning linebackers and some DBs, like on a deep post from Joe Flacco today. The big question is if he puts on 20 pounds to help his blocking, will he keep his 4.6 speed? He clearly need to get bigger to handle the blocking assignments . . .
Bryce Hall made a lot of plays in coverage today. He’s not giving up his starting CB job without a fight . . .
The Jets linebacker pass coverage still needs some work – there were several passes caught by tight ends on linebackers today. Not to nitpick in OTAs, but the bottom line is the Jets linebackers need to get their hands on more balls in pass coverage, whether it’s OTAs or in games . . .
