You should not make assumptions.
When you see a player listed with a toe injury, most assume (including me), that it’s a turf toe.
But C.J Mosley’s injury isn’t really a turf toe.
At Tennessee, in trying to make a tackle, he inadvertently kicked an opponent jamming his toe.
Often, turf toe injuries happen when a player tries to pivot on artificial turf and the toe gets stuck on the fake stuff.
So while Mosley does have a serious toe injury, it’s not turf toe . . .
Speaking of injuries, recently the Jets signed center Connor McGovern to their practice squad. He was their starting center from 2020-23, aside from the game he missed, including the second half of last season with a knee injury.
He is still wearing a sleeve and brace on that leg, so he’s still seems to be on the road to recovery, but he’s healthy enough to play.
What a great insurance policy in case something happens to Joe Tippmann.
Veterans like this would rarely sign with a practice squad 5-10 years ago, but the stigma is gone after the practice squad salaries went up and numbers increased during COVID-19. They needed more bodies back then in case somebody got COVID-19, so it became more of a taxi-squad compared to a developmental practice squad . . .
Speaking of veterans on the practice squad, the Jets released rookie safety Jaylen Key to make room for veteran safety Jalen Mills, who is 30.
Jets GM Joe Douglas knows Mills well. The LSU product was a seventh-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016, Douglas first-year as the Eagles’ vice president of player personnel, and they were together three years in Philly.
The last three seasons Mills was in New England playing under Bill Belichick, who is considered a secondary guru, so he got some really good training in Foxboro. Belichick was always very involved with the DBs.
Nothing against Key, who will likely brought back soon (his locker was still intact with his stuff in the locker room today), but if there is an injury to a safety, who would be better equipped to help them this season, a rookie, or a guy with 83 career NFL starts?
The way NFL teams are using the practice squads now is so different than in the past, and it’s helping them on game day when they have more battle-ready veterans to call up . . .
If you were to build a left tackle in the lab, he would look like Tyron Smith. – 6-5, 320 with arms like vines and the feet of a dancing bear.
Seeing him up close the last few months, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a guy carrying 320 pounds, who almost looks skinny. This guy is 320 pounds and not fat in any way, shape or form.
Not sure what his jean size is, but it might not be way different than mine (a 34) – LOL.
If you were to put a left tackle in the picture dictionary, this is the guy’s picture you should use.
And by the way, the Jets have done a wonderful job of keeping him on a pitch count, giving him practices off every week to keep him fresh and healthy. Due to no fault of his own, he has not played a complete season since 2016. He’s had some bad injury luck. The Jets approach with him has been quite pragmatic . . .
There was a recent story (before the two-game winning streak) in “The Athletic,” which has become a Jets” nemesis (remember the story after last season with the 30 sources), which described the Jets as being in “complete disarray.”
Aaron Rodgers said this week on ESPN:
“I would say the culture is about the opposite of what that article said. I didn’t read the article, but just reading that headline there, it sounds like it was written by Haason Reddick’s agent. Former agent, I guess, possibly. In a way to try and disparage our great organization.”
Two things about that.
First of all, some might find it a little surprising that Rodgers would speculate on a reporter’s source. Now a lot of times we can assume where a reporter got something, but rarely do you hear a public figure say who they think the source was. Very unusual. Unless you are wiretapping a reporter’s phone lines, how could you know who a source was?
So that was interesting. Also interesting is that Rodgers speculated that the Reddick changed agents.
For those scoring at home, the supposedly agent source, and the supposed replaced agent, would be Tory Dandy. But I can’t confirm he was the source or was fired.
Rodgers is something else.
