With the way the Jets view things, Geno Smith will always get his job back, because they will always pointing to the things that are wrong around him.
“Again, I don’t care who you have back there, it was going to be tough sledding for anybody at that spot,” Rex Ryan said today.
There are always going to be problems for a football team – even the good ones, so the Jets can keep pointing to the bad stuff, and say, “it’s not all his false.”
Rex Ryan played this card when Mark Sanchez was struggling, and now he’s doing it when Geno Smith struggles.
And I suspect he will keep doing it.
For people to now pretend that this team has a bad offensive line is ridiculous.
D’Brickashaw Ferguson basically shutdown Dwight Freeney except for one play at the end.
This is a very good run blocking line. We have seen this in several games in 2014.
Of course they gave up some pressure in this last game. Nick Mangold surprisingly struggled against nose tackle Sean Lissemore at times. That is a player he should handle.
But a few of the pressures came from delayed safety blitzes. This is often on the quarterback. The blockers can’t pick up everybody. And one reason a delayed safety blitz works against Smith is that he often holds the ball too long.
And this led to some of the pressure in San Diego. To me, there were times he had enough time to make a play, but he doesn’t process fast enough.
The NFL record for least amount of sacks in a season was by the Miami Dolphins with Dan Marino, when their line allowed just seven sacks. You know darn well a big reason for that was Marino’s quick decisions.
Too often, Geno Smith puts too much pressure on his linemen by not getting rid of the ball fast enough.
The other problem for the Jets’ protectors is related to teams sending extra rushers because they don’t respect the Jets’ passing attack. They don’t need extra guys in coverage. Some of this might be related to the lack of speed at wide receiver (though T.J. Graham should help in that regard), but also because Smith is often married to his first read, and this cuts down on the amount of cover guys you need.
To me, the Jets should give Michael Vick a try.
They need a win in the worst way.
For Rex to anoint Geno the starter right after the San Diego game, considering Geno was late for a meeting, and played very poorly, is unconscionable. And then Rex was making all kinds of excuses for Geno missing the meeting.
How do you think Bill Belichik or Bill Parcells would handle a player missing a meeting? Do they make excuses with the media? No way. How does that teach accountable to the club?
Rex is too often too soft as a disciplinarian.
Can you imagine the players’ reaction in the Saturday meeting in San Diego when the quarterback, the most important player on the roster, didn’t show up?
Why not make Geno wait a couple of days before you announce who the starter is?
I’m telling you, Rex is teetering on the brink of losing the locker room. The players know that Vick gives them a better chance to win. They’re not stupid. And then this meeting nonsense happens, which had to piss off the veterans.
People are so fast to destroy John Idzik for the job he’s doing, and they have a right to attack him.
But to me, Rex and Idzik both should be ripped for what is going on here.
They both need to get their acts together.
