As you know, he was here today.
Today was the first spring practice Mekhi Becton attended. The Jets’ off-season program opened on April 18. It is now June 14.
Here is reportedly going to speak to the media on Wednesday.
How did he look? He looked the same as last summer, whatever your opinion is of that. I can’t give you a specific weight, just saying he looked the same as when we last saw him on the field. Not passing judgment, telling what I saw.
My take on Becton in regards to his size:
When he was a rookie, he did some really good things, especially as a run blocker, where he was dominating at times, and the team praised him regularly on social media. He was promoted as a special talent, a force.
So in his mind, he’s probably like, “Why do I need to slim down. You guys were fine with this size as a rookie and praised the hell out of me.”
Fox Sports Brock Huard said he was 380 at the end of his rookie year.
Not saying he’s 380 now, because we don’t know that he was 380 last summer. That Huard information was from late 2020. Just saying Becton looks the same as last summer . . .
Joe Flacco can still sling it.
He threw a 50-yard bomb down the left sideline to Calvin Jackson, but the receiver couldn’t come down with it, but it was a heck of a throw.
Flacco just flicked his wrist and launched a rocket.
His arm strength is as good as ever . . .
When people talk about the Jets’ pass rush, free-agent addition Jacob Martin isn’t brought up that much, especially since they drafted two ends, but he’s clearly a big part of their plans, after getting $6 million guaranteed in the contract he signed in March to come over from the Houston Texans,
The reason I bring him up today is he did a nice job of looping inside on a stunt and getting by Alijah Vera-Tucker. Martin is very quick . . .
Cornerback Michael Carter has made a number of nice plays in pass coverage in the spring camps, including today when he broke up a pass, a deep out on the right sideline from Zach Wilson (not sure of the receiver – could not make out the number). Carter looks like he can be a very good nickel back for the Jets this season.
He did some good things for them last year, but watching him break on the ball through the spring, you can tell he’s even more comfortable at this point after a year learning on the job . . .
People debate on Twitter about how Zach Wilson looked today (or any other day) in spring practice, because sometimes there are different takes, from different reporters, on the same practice.
And this isn’t a judgment of any reporter. The reason there are mixed reviews is that there are a lot of pass plays in spring practices, so it depends which throws, complete or incomplete, you decide to weigh heaviest in your analysis.
I’m not into stats or giving grades this time of year because these practices are mostly about teaching and learning, but I will offer this assessment of Wilson’s spring:
Wilson really likes to make plays on the move on bootlegs, like today when he rolled left and threw against his body, a perfect strike on a crossing route to WR Jeff Smith, once again showing his ability to make off-platform throws.
He also loves to make plays when it turns into street-yard ball, like he did in the Jets’ win over Tennessee last year. When the play breaks down, and he can scramble around and find an open receiver downfield, he loves those opportunities.
Wilson still needs a little work on throwing from the pocket, but his throws on the move are an exciting part of his game.
