Lost in all the hoopla of the Jets blowout win over the Houston Texans, was what a rough game left tackle Mekhi Becton had.
Looking back over the game, the left tackle had one of his roughest games of the year.
There were four rough plays of note.
He gave up two sacks to defensive end Jonathan Greenard in the fourth quarter.
Remember that play in the second quarter, when Zach Wilson made a nice off script play, where he rolled left and hit Garrett Wilson for a gain of 25. Well, on this play, Greenard beat Becton for a quarterback pressure, forcing the QB to roll left.
He was also called for holding Texans defensive end Derek Barnett in the second quarter.
Now, you won’t see a lot written about this because it’s not about the QB, but this is a problem.
And this wasn’t his first bad game.
They punished Allen Lazard, C.J. Uzomah and Michael Carter for bad plays, why does Becton get a pass?
The NFL is a league rife with double standards when it comes who gets a pass and who doesn’t.
It is what it is . . .
With the recent placement of Uzomah on injured reserve, some have speculated that this might spell the end of his days as a Jet.
However, Aaron Rodgers might not let that happen. He is good friends with Uzomah, and Rodgers clearly has a seat at the table when it comes to player personnel decisions.
But if the Jets do move on, it looks like they have a player ready to replace him at the tight end position in Kenny Yaboah, who just returned from injured reserve recently.
Yaboah had a great block in the first quarter against Houston, leading the way on a Breece Hall gain of 13 on a pitch to the left side.
So you could see Tyler Conklin, Jeremy Ruckert and Yaboah as the Jets trio at tight end next season . . .
The Jets cornerback play against Houston was sensational.
Their two starting cornerbacks, Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed combined for five passes defensed. Gardner had two and Reed and had three. Five PDs for a cornerback combo is outstanding.
And their nickel bad, Michael Carter, had a near pick late first half on a crossing route to Robert Woods.
This is a really good trio of corners, and this group, along with the Jets talented defensive line, one of the best pass rushing groups in the NFL, will give them a punchers chance in Miami, especially with wide receiver Tyreek Hill iffy for the game . . .
I just heard a talking head say, “Zach Wilson is playing much better football lately.”
One half constitutes “lately?”
We will find out if he’s truly “playing better football lately” when the Jets travel to Miami this weekend to face Vic Fangio’s defense.
If he plays well at Hard Rock Stadium, against a talented defense, then we can say Wilson is “playing better football lately.”
You shouldn’t make categorical statements based one half of good football.
