Another reason for
the Jets strong fourth-quarter performances, aside from good coaching and player’s performances, is the work of their Athletic Care and Performance Department, which came into being on March 11, 2021, led by Dr. Brad DeWeese with a staff that includes Dr. Matt Sams and Dr. Omar Ahmad.
A lot of doctors. There are other accomplished people involved who aren’t doctors, and this group has implemented some state-of-the-art initiatives related to conditioning, nutrition, sleep and so forth, and this is one of the factors that has helped the Jets with their strong fourth quarters, a period a lot of teams fade . . .
I heard a line once from a former NFL executive, who was talking about what a young QB needs to do, in the Kyle Shanahan offense, which the Jets run.
“All he has to do is take the profits – take what the [offensive coordinator] gives him – let [the playmakers] skill take over,” said the former executive.
This so perfectly lays out what Zach Wilson needs to do to be successful. He did a good job taking this approach against Buffalo . . .
It’s unclear whether Jets right guard Nate Herbig will be able to play Sunday at New England.
He was on the rehab field today, working alongside George Fant, doing some light stuff with trainers.
Herbig seemed to have a compression sleeve on his left leg. He is listed with a shin injury.
The scrappy Herbig is the kind of guy who will play hurt, so if there is any chance he can go, he will . . .
The Jets had guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif in for a workout today. He played for them last year after an in-season trade with Kansas City.
The workout was actually going on when the media was taken through the field house from the media room to the locker room for interviews.
The Jets personnel staff was well represented, and O-Line coach John Benton was there, along with assistant O-Line coach Ben Wilkerson.
Duvernay-Tardif came into the locker room briefly, and hugged defensive tackle Nathan Shepherd, a fellow Canadien.
It remains to be seen if Duvernay-Tardif signs with the Jets, but it’s surprising that no team signed him before this, especially a team like Tampa Bay with major interior line issues.
Maybe he just wants to play for the Jets if he comes back . . .
Saw a player I didn’t recognize on the practice field today wearing #41, and looked it up, and it was a safety named Jared Mayden, who the Jets added to their practice squad on November 5. There was no practice last week, so this is the first we saw of him.
Robert Saleh knows him when they were together in San Francisco (2020). Mayden signed as an undrafted free agent with the 49ers in 2020, and bounced between their practice squad and a regular roster that year. He was on the practice squad with San Francisco to start the 2021 season, but was waived October 18, and then he spent the rest of the season on the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad. He got hurt in the Eagles 2022 training camp, was put on IR, but was waived off IR on September 20, and landed on Buffalo’s practice squad. He was cut on November 3, and the Jets jumped on him.
The fact that he keeps getting signed shows you there is talent there. He’s never been out of work long. And he’s an Alabama defensive back, which always has to grab your attention. Nick Saban not only recruits great DB talent, but Saban made his bones as a secondary coach, and does a great job developing DBs for the NFL. Mayden had four picks as a senior for the Crimson Tide. He was a major recruit coming of high school, with offers from programs like Alabama, Michigan and Oklahoma.
Not a bad guy to have in the building if there is a safety injury . . .
For what it’s worth, Sheldon Rankins was in the locker room today, and had nothing on his injured elbow – no brace, no wrap.
Rankins was injured in the Jets’ win over Buffalo.
