This was a brutal opening matchup for the Jets, and it would have been an upset if they won.
To face Nick Bosa, Leonard Floyd, Javon Hargrave and company behind a reworked offensive line, that didn’t play in the preseason, is a recipe for disaster.
As for their defense, this was a bad matchup because the Jets aren’t good against the run, and the 49ers offense is all about the run, with the run setting up the pass, and the Jets’ run defense was terrible tonight.
People who said the Jets had an elite defense last year were mistaken.
Because you can’t be an elite defense if you struggle to stop the run, which was the case last year with the Jets.
and this issue reared its ugly head once again the opener. Jordan Mason, the 49ers third-string tailback with Christian McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell out, dominated them. Mason is undrafted free agent from Georgia Tech.
Once again, the edge-setting was not great, with the unusual suspects, and undersized defensive tackles getting engulfed, with a perfect example of the later a 14-yard run by Jordan Mason in the second quarter.
When Javon Kinlaw isn’t on the field, they are small up the middle with Leki Fotu on injured reserve.
While the Jets lost this game, don’t be shocked if they win the next four.
Getting out this game with the offensive line getting comfortable and Rodgers getting out healthy, was the key, and now the competition level drops significantly in the next four games.
They are going from the SEC to the MAC the next four games . . .
Breece Hall had a fumble, dropped pass and a failed two-point conversation run.
He is a very talented player, but as Bill Parcells would say, “Don’t put him in Canton yet.
Too often with young Jets talent, there is too much social media hype, and it’s bad for the player.
He’s a terrific player, and does a lot of good things, but leave the kid alone with all the hype and just let him focus on his craft . . .
On a failed two-point conversion in the third quarter and a failed third-and-one carry in the fourth quarter, Hall was the ball carrier.
Why wasn’t it rookie Braelon Allen? Wasn’t the 6-1, 235-point rookie out of Wisconsin picked to help improve the Jets short-yardage offense?
Strange . . .
In the first quarter, the Jets’ defense did a nice job on the 49ers, but then chess master Kyle Shanahan got a good feel for what they were doing, and from the second quarter into the third quarter, they scored on five straight possessions . . .
The most important thing for the Jets tonight was getting of this game with Aaron Rodgers in one piece.
It was not a great night in pass protection for the Jets.
“The 49ers edge-rushers are winning their battles,” said play-by-play man Greg Papa.
The most important play of the game, might have been in the first quarter, when Leonard Floyd beat left tackle Tyron Smith, and was bearing down on Rodgers, and the QB flipped the ball to Breece Hall for a short gain.
Remember, it was Floyd who ended Rodgers season last year four plays in with a sack for Buffalo, leading to a torn Achilles ending the quarterbacks season.
If you don’t learn from history you are doomed to repeat it. Rodgers certainly learned, not giving Lloyd a second bite at the apple early in the first game.
