Kind of surprising.
When the Jets made the decision to go with Tim Boyle at QB, instead of Zach Wilson, but what is just as surprising is why nobody asked the head coach, at his two press conferences since the decision, on Monday and Wednesday, why they are going with Boyle instead of Trevor Siemian?
Not saying it’s the wrong decision, but just wondering about the thinking.
Siemian has much more starting experience. Boyle has three career NFL starts, and Siemian has 30. Boyle is 0-3 as an NFL starter, and Siemian is 13-17.
What was the thinking? Was Aaron Rodgers involved in the decision? In the spring, Rodgers said Boyle is “like a little brother to him.”
They were in Green Bay together from 2018-20.
Once again, nobody knows right now if the decision to start Boyle over Siemian was the right now.
Just would like to know the thinking, but obviously, my curiosity isn’t shared by other reporters . . .
It is amazing to me how many people you’ve heard say something like this the last few days – “You can bench Zach Wilson all you want, it will not change a single thing.”
That was from Dan Orlovsky.
How does anybody know that it “will not change a single thing?”
Look, I don’t know how this is going to turn out, but the one thing I can tell you, and this isn’t meant as a shot at Zach Wilson who did the best he could, but with Boyle, the ball will come out faster.
You can write that down.
Will that lead to better results, I have no idea, but it could, because even though Wilson was hurt by inconsistent pass protection the last few weeks, there were plenty of plays mixed in, where the protection was okay and the ball was perhaps held too long.
Like I mentioned a couple of weeks ago during the Jets’ loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, I heard a fan sitting in the section in front of the press box yell on a play, “Throw the ball.” The fan could sense on that play the ball was held too long by the QB.
You saw last week in the Jets’ loss at Buffalo, when Boyle replaced Wilson in the second half, he wasn’t afraid to throw the ball into tight coverage, take some chances. He ended up throwing two picks, but you get the sense watching Boyle, he kind of had the attitude with some of his throws – “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.”
So I can assure you, one thing that will be different is the ball will consistently come out faster.
Whether that leads to better results we shall see.
But when Robert Saleh said, “He is a different style of quarterback,” that is so true.
And in his first press conference after being named the starter, Boyle made it clear, over and over again – “I think my priority this week is going to be getting the ball out on time, not trying to take sacks, just getting the ball in our playmaker’s hands.”
And one of those playmakers should be Randall Cobb.
It’s been kind of crazy not to have him active the last couple of games.
He’s a professional receiver who knows how to get open.
And considering his history in this offense, and having some background with Boyle, he should be on the active list this week.
