Some thoughts on Mr. Coffee’s comments . . .
“Obviously, we only won five games,” Maccagnan in his opening statement to the media yesterday at his press briefing.
That is exactly right. As Bill Parcells used to say, “There are no medals for trying.”
5-11 two years in a row is not good enough. It’s time for the Jets to step up. This isn’t T-Ball.
“We think that some of our young players only from the previous season made development. I think we feel good about some of our young draft picks,” Maccagnan said.
Obviously, he’s high on them – all of them made the team.
Every draft pick made the team two years in a row. That is pretty impressive record.
To me, until the Jets stop the draft pick politics, and truly keep the best players, and always start the best players, they are hurting their football culture.
Throw the rose-colored glasses in the dumpster!
I’m not saying they haven’t had some good picks. Of course they have, like Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye, but mixed in are some political moves that are hurting them, like the coverage linebacker who rarely makes plays in coverage, or the cornerback they continue to roll with even though he has the skillset and physical make-up (stiff hips) of a safety.
If these guys want to take the next step, stop the politics.
I’m not being mean. I’m being realistic.
“One of the things I did like a lot about our season this year was the chemistry of the locker room and the way the players played,” Maccagnan said.
Totally agree with this. The Jets’ football culture did a 180 this year. That late-season Los Angeles Chargers and New Orleans Saints’ games were a good example. The Jets lost 14-7 to the Chargers, a team with a high-powered offense, and the Jets were starting a QB, who is a hell of guy, but is more of a #3, and the game went down to the end. I know there are “no medals for trying” but I’m just trying to point out the sea-change in attitude of this team. The fought their butts off to the end with Phillip Rivers facing a QB who doesn’t look like starting material. That is bringing a knife to a gun fight. The game before that, against the New Orleans Saints, I thought the Jets were going to absolutely destroyed, but they were close late into the fourth quarter. They put up quite a fight with a #3 QB against Drew Brees.
Once again, I don’t believe in moral victories, but I saw something in these two games that exemplified a sea change in culture. They fought and fought and fought, even devoid of some necessary pieces, and came up a bit short.
So if they add some of the needed pieces in an off-season, armed with a ton of cap space, and three picks in the first two rounds, they can take that next step.
