It’s time for a heaping helping of Jets Whispers from Florham Park. Dan checks in from One Jets Drive. Enjoy . . .
Wayne Hunter was wearing a shin guard in recent weeks to protect his badly injury shin, but took it off for last few days in practice. Well, he got hit in the injured area again, so he’s asked to get the guard back from the trainers . . .
Jamaal Westerman (high ankle sprain) says he healthy enough to play on Sunday, but doesn’t know if he will be active on Sunday. It could come down to Westerman or Vernon Gholston.
Do the Jets have the gumption to de-active Gholston and take the PR hit? . . .
Maybe the Jets can get something out of Patrick Turner – Miami couldn’t. Brian Schottenheimer said on Thursday that WR coach Henry Ellard has had a big influence on Turner.
On Friday, Turner got a rep with the starting offense, even though he’s on the practice squad. That is unusual . . .
On Wednesday, Will Billingsley’s first practice with the Jets, I noticed the cornerback had a big knee brace on, and was hobbling a little. I speculated that he might not be 100 percent.
I caught up with him on Thursday, and he confirmed that he’s 10 months removed from a serious knee injury suffered while on Miami’s practice squad. He says he’s still rehabbing, but can do most things he needs to in practice. He’s about a month away from being 100 percent. The Jets like him so much, they decided to help him finish his rehab.
We don’t know much about him as a player, but we do know he has TREMENDOUS speed . . .
Howard Green had quite the travel nightmare this week. After getting cut by the Jets on Monday, he embarked on a 20 hour drive from Florham Park to his hometown, Perryville, LA. When he finally crossed the Louisiana border his agent called, and told him to get to the nearest airport, because the Green Bay Packers had claimed him. He headed to Baton Rouge, but missed his flight because he got caught in rush hour traffic. So he drove to New Orleans, flew to Atlanta, but got stuck there overnight due to weather issues. He booked a 6 AM flight for the next morning, and it was delayed for three hours . . .
There is a good chance that Green could get significant playing time if defensive lineman Ryan Pickett (ankle) and Cullen Jenkins (calf) can’t play. The buzz in Green Bay is that Jenkins has a better chance of playing than Pickett . . .
It’s no secret the Jets are looking to improve their pass rush coming out of the bye-week. I was just watching some of the Packers-Dolphins game from a few weeks ago, and it looks like the Jets should be able to get something done against Green Bay’s rookie right tackle Brian Bulaga. Miami OLB Cameron Wake finished that game with three sacks, and two of them were against Bulaga. Look for the Jets to go after the kid, who is only 21 . . .
Whether the Jets want to acknowledge this or not, there are going to be a TON of Packer fans in the New Meadowlands on Sunday. There is going to be a mixed din in the crowd . . .
The Jets won’t have to face cornerback Al Harris (knee) on Sunday. The Packers were mulling whether to activate Harris for Sunday, but decided against it. Harris hasn’t played at all this season . . .
