San Jose – In the Jets opening-day loss to the San Francisco 49ers, their run defense was terrifying.
Reserve running back Jordan Mason, an undrafted free agent out of Georgia Tech, ran 28 times for 147 yards (5.3 average).
“I know we’re going to get the defense fixed,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said on Monday. “It’s not a problem.”
They will only fix their run defense if they make the requisite changes to repair it.
You can’t keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect a different result.
While so many people were telling us how great their defense was last year, those people clearly don’t value run defense, because the run defense issues you saw in San Francisco, were going on in 2023:
Getting gashed up the middle, not setting the edge properly, aggressive players overrunning plays, using undersized defensive linemen on the goalline.
None of this is new.
So unless they make some lineup changes and tweak their scheme, it’s going to be hard to fix their run defense.
Blind faith in players isn’t going to get it done.
