This is a factor that is not emphasized enough, at least publicly.
Aaron Rodgers should be factored into who the Jets hire as GM and head coach.
Now, obviously, you have to be careful hiring a football brass based on one player, but if you want this guy to play another year or two, which they certainly should after his 28 TD season, and strong performances against Miami (twice) and Jacksonville late in the season, he should factor into what they do.
The Buffalo debacle wasn’t his fault with third-string left and right tackles, and a horrific defensive performance.
If you want a 4-time MVP to come back, you need to consider who you hire.
Hiring a rookie head coach, learning on the job, in his first year as a head coach, is probably not the way to go if you want Rodgers to hang around another year or two.
And honestly, considering they have missed the playoffs 14 years in a row, that is another reason to go out and get somebody who won’t be entering his first rodeo and will come out of the gate in Week 1 next season knowing all the whys and wherefores of being a head coach.
So don’t consider this Rodgers’ appeasement, but just the way to go at this particular time, and the gravy is a seasoned, veteran coach, will likely make it more attractive to the QB to come back.
Rodgers does not deal well with coaching malpractice.
Not saying Rodgers needs to be involved with the selection process, but if they want him come back, it might be smart to avoid amateur hour in 2025.
“I tink everybody understands that it’s going to co down to (the) GM and coach and myself, and whether we all want to do a dance together — or if it’s not in the cards,” Rodgers said.
What coach and GM combo, in their right minds, would watch that Miami game in Week 18, or the Jacksonville game in Week 15 and say, “Let’s just toss that guy to the curb.”
Do you think QB play like that grows on trees?
The national championship game is coming up on January 20 between Ohio State and Notre Dame. Watching those teams during the season and in the playoffs, not sure either one of those starting QBs is starting on Sundays anytime soon.
Watching the Green Bay Packer-Philadelphia Eagle game last weekend, both their QBs make over $50 million a year and watching them in that game you wonder why.
Did you see the Chargers’s Justin Herbert against Houston throwing four picks in a wild-card round loss? He also makes over $50 million a year.
It’s barren out there man. The way Rodgers played this year was far from perfect, but it’s the best QB I’ve seen around these parts in a long time.
Why would toss that to the curb? Makes no sense.
Some people would say the new regime is best to cut the cord and start fresh, since some feel Rodgers can be a pain in butt sometimes with his comments.
Okay, so you can go out and draft a QB or sign a journeyman, and supposedly have less drama because #8 is gone.
But how well are you going to do as a team?
Well you can say, well the Jets went 5-12 this season with him at QB.
I have said it before, and I will say it again, he was the last of their problems.
What happened to that supposed juggernaut defense? What happened? Totally overrated by some reporters and fans. It was never that good. They weren’t good at stopping the run for essentially each of the last four years.
So the point here is simple – if you want to keep Rodgers, you better hire a veteran coach who comes out of the gate knowing what the hell he is doing.
If they hire a rookie HC, I would not if he walks off into the sunset.
