Since you can’t touch the QB, they essentially have forever to pass in OTAs, so some completions would not happen in a real game.
There were a few of those today, including the last play of practice, in a red zone drill, when QB Tyrod Taylor hit TE Zack Kuntz for a touchdown.
This play lasted way longer than most real football play, probably would have been over, perhaps with a throwaway, sack or scramble way before the completion . . .
While it doesn’t mean a ton, rookie free agent defensive tackle Leonard Taylor had two nice plays, one a QB pressure, and another a run stop at the line.
Yes, there is no tackling, but you can see defensive linemen beat offensive linemen into gaps off the snap, and that is what Taylor did on both of these plays.
Look, I have no idea what happened with the Miami Hurricanes and why he went undrafted after coming in as a five-star recruit, but maybe the Jets can catch lightning in a bottle with a player recruiting site 24/7 Sports compared to Sheldon Richardson coming out of high school . . .
Aaron Rodgers threw a deep pass over 50 yards to Allen Lazard, who got behind the starting defense, but the receiver couldn’t run under it.
Lazard didn’t do anything wrong here, but he doesn’t run 4.4, so it was hard for him to catch up to the pass.
But the bigger story on this play is why the starting defense allowed Lazard to get behind the secondary.
You had the starting secondary out there. There was a lot of talk amongst the coverage guys after the play about what might have happened.
Remember, Chuck Clark didn’t play last season after being acquired in a trade from Baltimore in the off-season and blowing out a knee in OTAs. So there are still some kinks to work out between Clark and his still relatively new teammates, who he didn’t play with last year, and that is what spring and summer practices are for . . .
Rookie cornerback Quan’tez Stiggers had a play that stood out, where he had tight coverage on a back shoulder throw to Lazard on the left side of the end zone that was incomplete . . .
The Jets are taking things very slow with guard Alijah Vera-Tucker, who is coming off a torn Achilles. He hasn’t been practicing in the spring.
A guy, who they like, who might fill in for him until he’s ready, is Jake Hanson, a former Oregon guard, who was a sixth-round pick of the Green Bay Packers. Hanson spent some time on the practice squad and regular roster with the Jets last season after being waived with an injury settlement last summer in Green Bay, where he spent three seasons . . .
The Jets signed Eastern Michigan receiver Hamze El-Zayat, from Robert Saleh’s hometown of Dearborn following a minicamp tryout.
But even though he is listed as a receiver, he is now wearing a running back number – 34, so maybe they were a position change.
El-Zayat had a nice deep catch today from QB Andrew Peasley . . .
Jets defensive end Jermaine Johnson (pictured above) is currently at 262 pounds. He wants to carry a weight that will give him enough power to play the run, but also allow him to keep his quickness off the edge as a pass rusher, and he feels 262 is a good weight for that.
