Florham Park – This kid is heat-seeking missile . . .
Jets rookie linebacker Blake Cashman is very physical and was involved with a pair of collisions today that dinged teammates.
Promising TE Daniel Brown returned to practice on Monday after missing some time with a hamstring injury. In Tuesday’s practice, he seemed to get dinged again, when he and Blake Cashman collided and on a pass down the left sideline. He limped after getting up and and later in practice had extra tape on his right foot/ankle.
Cashman also crushed WR Craig Dortch on a shallow cross. It was one of those hits that had concussion written all over it. This play was a perfect example of why some people, looking to make football safer, have pondered the idea of banning zone defense. In a zone, a defender is often just positioned right in front of guy catching the ball, and can light him up after the catch. In man-to-man, they are running behind him. I don’t think zone will be banned, but this kind of play demonstrates why it’s been discussed . . .
Rookie free agent defensive end Kyle Phillips (Tennessee) is listed at 6-4, 277, but he looks about 20 pounds heavier than that. He clearly bulked up from his Tennessee weight to handle the rigors of 3-4 end . . .
The Jets new center Ryan Kalil didn’t practice, but he was attached at the hip with offensive line coach Frank Pollack going over plays and concepts for a big chunk of the practice . . .
Tim White had an impressive deep out for a TD on the left side of the end zone in a drill, and was talking smack with some cornerback after the play.
He’s not just really fast, but also very confident.
White isn’t just fast, but he’s explosive. It’s not always the same thing. He was a triple-jumper in college, and has legs are like pogo sticks with a lot of explosive bounce . . .
Very early on in the team part of practice, Sam Darnold threw a screen to Le’Veon Bell, and then on the next play, a quick slant. I’m telling you right now, if Bell stays healthy, I would not be shocked to see him get near the 100-catch mark. Darnold loves throwing to him, and why not, he’s a great receiving back . . .
This kid from Elmont, Long Island, OLB Justin Alexandre, has some pass rush to him. He’s very raw after going the JUCO route and then playing at 1-AA Incarnate Word in San Antonio, but you can see the potential.
He also is very humble and earnest – he actually came over to the Jets’ special teams coaches today and apologized for making a mistake.
He’s likely a practice squad candidate, but there is definitely raw talent here to work with here . . .
Saw pass rusher Jachai Polite bend under tight end Ryan Griffin to take the edge.
In order to be an elite pass rusher, you need to do this. You have to be flexible enough to bend under tall tackles. A lot of guys can’t do it. Polite can . . .
LB Frankie Luvu had a terrific run stop on Le’Veon Bell for no gain on the line. Luvu is more stout and much stronger this year thanks to an entire off-season NFL strength program.
