East Rutherford – These scenarios were a big reason he was picked.
Jets 2024 fourth-round pick Braelon Allen, a powerfully built 6-1, 235-pound back out of Wisconsin, is known for being a terrific short-yardage back.
The Jets short yardage running game wasn’t very good last year.
So when you pick a player like this to help fix that, and you have the ball first-and-goal from the one, shouldn’t he get the ball?
Or when you have the ball second-and-goal from the one shouldn’t he get the ball?
These two scenarios presented themselves, on back-to-back plays, in the Jets’ loss to Denver, at the end of the first quarter, and the Jets handed the ball to a back not named Allen, and they got zero yards on both plays. Then after an incomplete pass and a penalty, they had to settle for a field goal.
This has to change.
Whether it’s an order from owner Woody Johnson or GM Joe Douglas, the coaches need to be told. “You have to use Allen on these goalline carries – that is why he was picked.”
There needs to be an edict.
The Jets ended up losing this game by one point.
Kicking a field goal here, instead of scoring a TD, might have cost the Jets the game.
