Jets must do this better on defense if they want to pitch shutouts

During an appearance on NFL Network, Jets defensive end Jermaine Johnson was asked what the goal was for the team’s defense this year.

“I mean, that’s the goal every single game, is to pitch a shutout, zero points on the board,” Johnson said. “So regardless of what the offense was going through, we know as a unit on defense that we had a standard we had to uphold that we set for ourselves, and that’s zero points on the board. So I mean, we didn’t get that done, and so until that’s done, every single game, zero points on the board, we’re not satisfied, and to be quite honest, we probably still won’t be.”

Aside from that lofty goal, another goal has to be for Johnson and the rest of his defensive teammates to become more stout against the run.

The Jets finished 25th against the run last year.

They need to become more stout up the middle, and the additions of massive defensive tackle Leki Fotu and Javon Kinlaw should help, but the ends also need to do a more consistent job of setting edge, and not let as many runners take the corner.
