A heaping helping of Training Camp Whispers – don’t miss out!
Rookie Bryce Huff continues to flash as a pass rusher. Today he beat Corbin Kaufusi for a “sack” of Mike White. The 6-9 Kaufusi still needs to work on lowering his pad level. Like a lot of very tall offensive tackles, he often plays too upright.
Perhaps it’s time to consider Huff for a pass rush role with the starters, at times. Right now, there are two many ends in the mix lacking ideal twitch and quickness off the edge. Huff seems to have it, along with Frankie Luvu. The Jets need more juice at end, more athleticism, more short-area quickness. They can’t keep rolling do the same plan as last year.
Luvu beat George Fant for a sack in practice. Luvu needs to play a lot more than last year . . .
Backup offensive tackle watch:
OT Conor McDermott was back on the practice field today with a brace on his right leg to protect the knee he hurt a couple of weeks ago.
Chuma Edoga was today out with a calf injury.
Watching the two backup offensive tackles today, the Jets need McDermott and Edoga back for depth – neither Kaufusi or Jared Hilbers are ready for prime time . . .
Sam Darnold had a beautiful back shoulder throw to Jehu Chesson down the left side – it caught the defensive back off guard. It was a great NFL throw.
Chesson is pretty good, as is Josh Malone.
I’m not an elitist. I won’t make fun of them on Twitter . . .
Awful 7 on 7 drill today for the Jets’ offense, including Sam Darnold throwing a pick to safety Ashtyn Davis. Darnold was not on the same page with his receiver on this page down the deep middle. There was another play where Darnold and tight end Trevon Wesco were totally not on the same page. Darnold threw to one spot and Wesco ran to another spot. This offense could ill afford to miss a valuable practice . . .
You have to give Adam Gase credit for this. He was asked a question about all the Jets’ injuries, and pointed to a lot of teams having the same problem.
Brian Costello, New York Post: Adam, are you shaking your head at what you’re dealing with right now with all these injuries?
“I do think we’re not the only ones,” Gase said. “I think there’s a lot of teams in the league right now that are dealing with all kinds of injuries. It’s just, I don’t think it’s being publicized as much, you guys get to see this every day and then we go through the injury report. So I mean we’re not the only team.”
The 49ers had to cancel a scrimmage the other day because they didn’t have enough healthy bodies.
The NFL and NFLPA screwed up by cutting the rosters from 90 to 80 before camp. It was a big mistake. There probably wasn’t a summer in NFL history where teams needed 90 guys more than this one. There have been a ton of pulled muscles due to the lack of off-season practices and conditioning programs, and couldn’t that have been predicted? . . .
Bless Austin and Mathias Farley each had medical sleeves on their right legs. You see a lot of these full leg medical sleeves these days – they must work really well . . .
The Jets claimed CB Zane Lewis off waivers from Arizona. You know how view waiver claim corners. Maybe Lewis will surprise, but there is a cornerback shortage in the NFL, and Arizona lost a starting cornerback, Robert Alford, to a season-ending injury, so they are thin at the position. With this player, Arizona didn’t even wait until the final cut to move on. Look, I could be 100 percent wrong, but I’m just saying teams rarely let corners they think are good out of the building.
