The Jets’ run defense is a problem.
And it was last year, even though many people chose to ignore this issue and tell us how great the defense was.
How can you have a great defense if you can’t stop the run?
There are scheme and personnel issues.
When you are facing a rookie QB like Denver’s Bo Nix, who is learning in the job so you can load the box, how does the other team still run 31 times for 126 yards?
When a rookie QB throws for 60 yards, how do you still give up 126 yards rushing?
Because the Jets run defense is broken. They struggled against San Francisco, Tennessee and Denver. It was a little better against New England, a team with the NFL’s worst offensive line.
What is wrong?
Two things are obvious.
Undersized linemen are getting engulfed by blockers, and also some players shoot too far upfield, being too aggressive, and take themselves out of plays.
Woody Johnson and Joe Douglas must demand that this issue is fixed, schematically and with different personnel packages.
The Jets are still 2-2. It’s not too late.
But if this run defense isn’t fixed, they could dig a hole record-wise they won’t be able to get out of.
